So long WordPress.com

This will be my final blog for the semester, crazy! This year has flown by so fast. I think after reading a book a week for the semester, except for one, I’ve definitely found a new love for novels that aren’t just romance or short-stories. I can say I’ve come to realize that my reading preferences have expanded far beyond the realms of these genres. I will say that there are some books that we’ve read that I probably would have “DNI’d” (AKA do not finished), for example, Agostino, as I probably would’ve stopped reading after the 50th page if I were not reading it for school unfortunately. However, this course has been a true test of resilience and curiosity, encouraging me to delve deeper into each novel and learn something meaningful even from the most challenging reads.

This takes me back to the first class we had where we talked about what it means to be a good reader, and I mentioned this briefly in my first blog post. Throughout the semester, I think I’ve gone through a journey, becoming a more attentive and insightful reader every week. Initially, my focus may have been more on simply getting through the assigned readings, but as time went on, I found myself increasingly drawn to really trying to understand what each books’ messages were trying to convey.

Furthermore, my favourite book of this semester was definitely “Death with Interruptions”. I loved the “dystopian” undertones and how it tackled the themes of death and what if it were to be eliminated from the world. I was constantly interested and engaged during this book. I found myself deeply captivated by the implications of a world without death and how the society I know and currently live amongst would deal with this idea and how this kind of scenario would reshape human existence. I think one of the reasons why I also loved this book is that I read this book when I had a lot more free time, so maybe that played a large factor as I was able to fully engage myself during this book.

I’m really proud to have accomplished my goal of reading all the books I set out to tackle this semester. It was definitely a challenge, particularly in the midst of my other challenging classes, but it was one that I have embraced.  I do typically read a lot during summer or when I have a break, but I’m glad this course gave me the opportunity to read even during school. I was somewhat able to escape this stress that I had from my other classes while by delving into a new book a week.

What book did you guys find most challenging to read? Did you find the difficulty enjoyable or did it contribute to your dislike of the book?

  3. Hi Alexandra, most challenging book for me was Faces in the Crowd. Jumping between timelines was confusing but also entertaining in a way. Glad to hear that this course pushed you outside your comfort zone! Have a nice summer.
